How we make money
| Item | Status (September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Affiliate or referral partners | None |
| Paid placements or sponsored content | None |
| Advertising on the site | None |
We intend to apply to affiliate programs run by pet insurers. If we join one, links that can earn us a commission will be marked with a disclosure placed next to the link, as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission asks, and this table will be updated at the same time. Commissions never change what we write or how we describe a product.
What our comparisons are based on
When we compare pet insurance, we look at total cost and at what a plan actually pays, not only the monthly premium. All statistics come from primary sources such as the industry association NAPHIA and the insurance regulators' association NAIC, and are cited on the page. The questions we ask of any plan:
| Area | What we look at |
|---|---|
| Price | Premium, and how it changes with the pet's age and over time. |
| Sharing of costs | Deductible (and whether it is annual, per condition or per incident), reimbursement rate and annual limit. |
| What is covered | Accident, illness, wellness, and what the policy excludes. |
| Rules that decide claims | Waiting periods and how the policy defines pre-existing, hereditary, congenital and chronic conditions. |
| Consumer protections | Free-look period, disclosure of terms and the state's rules. |
A worked example: why the cheapest premium is not always the cheapest year
The plans below are invented for illustration. On a $3,000 vet bill:
| Plan A | Plan B | |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | $360 a year | $780 a year |
| Deductible and reimbursement | $500, 70% | $250, 90% |
| You pay toward the bill | $1,250 | $525 |
| Total cost of a year with this bill | $1,610 | $1,305 |
| Total cost of a year with no claims | $360 | $780 |
Plan A is cheaper in a healthy year and more expensive in a year with a large bill. That is the trade-off we try to make visible. You can test your own numbers in the payout calculator.
